WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Through song, games, and hands-on learning, students will learn how the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) help maintain a healthy environment for all living things. | 30 minutes | Curriculum Connections: Science & Technology
What is the destiny of our waste? Through interactive activities, students explore the importance of the 3Rs and sustainability in our interrelationship with the natural environment. | 60 minutes | Curriculum Connections: Science & Technology; Social Studies
When food has gone bad, or when we throw our food waste out, is the garbage bin the best place to throw it? A lot of nutritious food comes from the soil, and we can do our part to help complete the food lifecycle by properly disposing of food waste! Students will uncover composting methods in the Region of Peel, investigate different stages of decomposition, and discover which items rot and which do not. | 60 minutes | Curriculum Connections: Science & Technology
Plastic products are useful to us in many ways, but where do they go when we throw them away? In this workshop, students will investigate the lifecycle of plastic products. Students will learn about the impacts of human interactions with natural habitats and communities, and what actions citizens can take to address the environmental impact of plastic production and disposal. | 60 minutes | Curriculum Connections: Science & Technology
Did you know that an estimated one third of all food produced globally is wasted? Through examining the difference between food scraps and food waste, and participating in food waste case studies, students will explore different perspectives on food waste and the various ways citizens and industries can take action to address related social and environmental issues. | 60 minutes | Curriculum Connections: Science & Technology; Social Studies
The convenience of pre-packaged foods makes them a popular choice for snack and lunchtime, but did you know that much of the garbage created in schools comes from food packaging? Through lunch-waste sorting and lifecycle of waste guessing games, students will explore the issues of over-packaged foods and their impact on the environment and global community. By thinking outside the “lunchbox”, participants will consider new ways to pack a healthier, lower-waste lunch. | 60 minutes | Curriculum Connections: Social Studies
Today, the newest and coolest phones seem to come in and out of style as fast as you can say LOL. In this workshop, students will investigate the lifecycle of electronics to uncover the resources used to create them and where they go when we are done with them. Students learn how to make the right call and reduce the impact of electronic and hazardous waste on the environment. | 60 minutes | Curriculum Connections: Geography; Science & Technology
Want it, buy it, own it, use it, hate it, toss it, then repeat. Consumerism impacts various aspects of the environment and sustainability. It drives demand for products and influences the materials economy – from resource extraction to production and transportation, use and disposal. Through exploring consumerism and lifecycle analysis, students will compare consumer needs with marketing strategies and learn how to make smart consumer choices that value the planet’s resources and promote sustainability. | 60 minutes | Curriculum Connections: Geography; Science & Technology
